Bravery - Burma Monks

There may be 10 to 20,000 of them, instead of one - but they are still standing in front of a tank.

Myanmar police, soldiers deployed to pagodas and monasteries

YANGON—Military-ruled Myanmar deployed armed soldiers and riot police to key pagodas and monasteries around Yangon on Wednesday, in a bid to prevent Buddhist monks from staging anti-junta protests, witnesses said.

Also during the night, Myanmar’s most famous comedian Zaganar, who had publicly thrown his support behind the monks, was arrested at his home, a friend told AFP.

“Zaganar was arrested around 1:30 am at his home,” because he brought food and water to the monks to support the protests, a friend told AFP.

Zaganar, along with other prominent movie stars and artists, had vocally urged the public to support the monks leading the most serious protests against the military regime in nearly two decades.

On Monday and Tuesday, he delivered food and water to monks as they prepared for their protests that drew 100,000 people into the streets.

Not my area of expertise, but I would say this is shaping up to be an unstoppable event - my hopes are with it having a good outcome.

It’s seeming like the government there as won this round, managed to crush the oppostion and instill some order on things, but there was a large scale panic and they actually doubled Army pay to keep them loyal, but will they be able to afford to do this if demonstrations reoccur? who knows?

also, will increasing pressure for a boycott of the 2008 olympics in China force a change of stance by China?

still genocide going on there of course, minority tribes in areas around the borders, being forced to flee, but that doesn’t prodice the nice pictures you get with a load of monks all dressed in bright red

Hi scouser! And yeah, it does seem as if the government has won this round. Especially as they seem to have completely locked the monks up, somewhere or other.

I know there was a petition of sorts going that was going to presented to the Chinese government, but I don’t know what happened from there. There is so much going on with all those involved (including the Western nations we know are just so interested in “democracy") that it’s difficult to know who is doing what and why.

Yep, that’s one reason they got so much attention around the world… the visual of the thousands of orange/red clad monks all lined up. I didn’t know about the minority tribes on the borders, though. Who are they?

Agree with Nanette, the government has won this round.. and it is a shame to hear it…
