Seeking light in a murky world

Taliban or not Taliban, that is the question?

by Melonhead99

I finally heard the answer today to a question I’ve asked lots of times over years, it’s this ‘We hear in Afghanistan that the Taliban are doing this or that, but what do we mean by the Taliban? Is it a group that calls themselves the Taliban, or a name we just give to anyone that attacks us?’

A BBC Reporter on the radio this morning was talking, he’s spent last 3 years in Afghanistan, and he said in passing ‘the Taliban attacks are increasing’ then went on to clarify this by saying that not all attacks are by the actual taliban, but rather Taliban is a catch all term we use for pretty much any criminal or illegal armed groups in Afghanistan, they’ll be called The Taliban, despite being nothing to do with the former Afghan regime.

I just find it interesting that we appear to be talked down to, things ‘simplified’ for us, we obviously are unable to anything more complex that one simple enemy.

Also he did say that when we are told our governments are talking to the Taliban, that again means they are just talking to local warlords and got sod all to do with the real Taliban.

This was info I’ve been looking for, not looked hard, maybe you already know all this, but I thought it might be of interest.
