Seeking light in a murky world

Seven Years On

by Doc Logan

It’ll be my generation’s most indelible memory. For a few hours that morning, it seemed as if the world was about to end. We cried for the dead, we donated blood, and we were no longer Black or White or Asian or Latino or Native, we were all Americans.

For a few days, anyway.

And almost immediately, the Bush adminuistration began channeling our fear and anger and confusion towards the end of an unnecessary, unneeded, and immoral war.

Of course, we found out later that none of it had to happen. None of it.

To this day, conservatives are exploiting the September 11 attacks. David Zucker is using the memory of the falling World Trade Center in an attempt to shame liberals. Rudy Guiliani turned the awful day into his campaign slogan. At the recent Republican convention, the delegates cheered any mention of 9/11.

I think the best way to honor the memory of those who died on that sad, sad day is to remember how politicians exploited the tragedy for their own evil ends, and to never let it happen again.
