Wednesday, December 03, 2008 That’s Senator Bad Touch To You, Pal by Doc Logan Saxby Chambliss won re-election to the Senate last night, due to name recognition, stunt endorsements, and willingness to dive into the sewer and gambol like a performing dolphin. I think the Democratic Party would do well to adopt a 49 state strategy, as Georgia may be a hopelessly lost cause. Not only did they defy the national trend towards more progressive politics, they ignored the most unbelievably creepy campaign video ever made. Get a load of where Chambliss rests his hand at the end of this video.
Anybody know the number of Child Protective Services in Georgia?

by Melonhead99 Queens Speech to Parliment today, where she reads out a statement prepared for her by the government, onlining what the government will be doing this year, one bit struck me, on Welfare Reform Aimed at creating “incentives” for people to return to work and “consequences” for those who do not, this bill applies to England, Scotland and Wales. It promises more “sanctions” against people who do not attend job centre interviews and work-focussed interviews for the over-60s. Penalties for over-60’s that don’t look for work, yep, now in Britain, not even the old get any peace from the Gordon Brown ‘Work Ethic’ insanity, oh what a glorious land I live in.

FINALLY Someone Explains What Is Going On In Canada by Nanette And in a way that we non-parliamentary government folks can easily grasp. And she (Stephanie Pearl-McPhee of Yarn Harlot) does it on a knitting blog (which is also pretty cool, if you are into knitting).
![]() Go figure (And go read!). via Booman Tribune Edited to add : How cool is this? Knitters Without Borders (or Tricoteuses Sans Frontières)! From the faq:
Also, she writes books. They look like fun for knitters (and non-knitters, too).

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 by Nanette My thoughts are with the people of Mumbai, India on this tragic and frightening day/night. I have friends in India although they no longer live in Mumbai, the last I heard.
Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Which should, of course, also be every day. Via Theriomorph’s post on this (linked above) I’ve learned of a great project called The Girl Effect, which seeks to promote the education of girls around the world as one way to stop the downward slide of many countries and also to make violence less likely to happen. (While I love the concept I hate their site, which is all in flash and after sitting through some of the flash presentations I still have no idea what actions they are encouraging those who wish to help to take.) From Phila’s Friday Hope Blogging, a cheetah conservationist, Dr. Laurie Marker, "has been awarded $50,000 by the Tech Museum of Innovation for her organization’s Bushblok program which uses a high-pressure extrusion process to convert invasive, habitat-destroying bush into a clean-burning fuel log. Bushblok provides an alternative to products such as firewood, coal, lump charcoal and charcoal briquettes that are costly or result in environmental harm".
I wonder if it would provide relief for us humans who can’t breathe wood smoke, as well? Regardless, I hope it catches on. photo of school girls in India by Ajay Kumar Singh via morguefile.com

Tuesday, November 25, 2008 Eurovision News Thing Update Stuff by Melonhead99 Just heard the new Renault car advert, and unless I’m very much mistaken, the music on it is the French Eurovision Song from this year, one that finished 19th out of 25, as the French stupidly picked an ok song.

Monday, November 24, 2008 by Melonhead99 We’ve all read of the pircacy around places like Kenya, Somalia and the like, African Pirates capturing, sinking and ransoming vessels. But how much have we read of the longterm problems of illegal fishing, by ships from as far away as China, EU and South Africa, as well as other places, massive trawlers using internationally banned fishing equipment to fish in protected waters off the coast of East Africa, looking for the Yellow Fin Tuna, the livelihood of many poor African fishermen being stripped away, some of these fishermen turning to piracy as the only form of income left open?. There are Navy ships from America, France, India, Canada, Australia, to name but a few, patrolling these nations to stop the piracy, but let me ask, when was the last time you heard of one of these ships stopping illegal fishing? Maybe they do stop it, I don’t know, but the fishing vessels can’t be that hard to spot surely, and there is massive ammounts of this illegal fishing going on?

I want my life back. I will have it back soon. Stay at home moms and dads and childcare workers are heroes. And teachers. That is all. Or, almost. Edited to add more whine and heroes. From the BBC Postcards designed by some of the world’s best known artists and designers are to go on sale later at London’s Royal College of Art. In total 2,700 postcards - some by established artists, others by students - will go on sale, each for £40, at the annual Secret Postcard Sale. But the identity of the artist is only revealed once the artwork is bought. [...] The event raises money for the RCA’s Fine Art Student Award Fund. Professor Glynn Williams, head of fine art at the RCA, said: "We are incredibly pleased with this year’s postcards donated by some of the world’s leading artists and designers. "RCA Secret is about securing the future of the next generation of artists and when the public buy postcards at the event they are helping to make this possible. "It’s one of the most democratic art sales in the world - everyone has an equal chance of getting a big name." [A very successful strategy, it appears:]
The Royal College of Art’s Secret postcard sale has sold more postcards in the first six hours than during the whole of last year’s sale.

Thursday, November 20, 2008 by Melonhead99 For shame on Nanette and her rude stuff, what next? promoting Harry Potter books? Anyway, all this stuff with pirates in Somalia, been going on for years, ships sunk, people killed etc, nobody gave a shit till it became about ‘oil’, once Oil was involved, people took an interest, shows what we put of worth above human lives. What else? Oh this was in the news here A Merseyside Police officer whose name was included on a list of British National Party (BNP) members has been suspended from duty. Pc Steve Bettley was listed in a leaked membership document published online. Police officers have been banned from being members of the anti-immigration party since 2004. Merseyside police said Pc Bettley had returned from holiday to co-operate with their inquiry and had been suspended from duty. A force spokesman said: “Merseyside Police can confirm that the police officer is subject to an ongoing internal investigation into his alleged association with the BNP has today been suspended from duty. “He returned from his holiday early to co-operate with the investigation. “We would like to reiterate we will keep an open mind until the facts around the alleged investigation have been established.” The officer once worked for a six-week period as a personal driver for the force’s chief constable, Bernard Hogan Howe. I do wonder what the point is of banning membership of racist groups, coz if someone’s in the BNP or not, thay’re still probably a racist bastard.

It’s hilarious that Obama was elected only 2 weeks ago… and has yet to take office or implement any policies at all and already the sky is falling, in some corners of the blogosphere. (Me, I’m with Liss) Takes me back to that day during the primaries when many of the big political bloggers (separately and independently, I’m sure) all declared the Obama candidacy dead in the water. It was over, done with, they had spoken. Strangely, Obama paid no attention to them and just continued to implement his campaign’s plan and the rest, as they say, really is history. I’m fairly certain that he also has a long range plan now and while I may not agree with all that he does - he’s no socialist, sadly - I’m curious to see what he will accomplish and how. Also funny… Al Qaeda has called Obama a "house negro" and, apparently, a tool of the Jews. I guess that makes nice a change from him being a Manchurian radical Muslim Black Panther, or whatever it is that some on the wacko right (and left) think he is. Some things to read - California Supreme Court is going to review Prop H8 ban - I don’t think minority populations rights should be put up to the vote anyway, but even when they are, the courts have (eventually) stepped in to override that vote. Let’s hope it happens this time too. Related, via P6 - Trends beyond black vote in play on Prop. 8 - One thing I wasn’t looking forward to, getting back online, was running into the (seemingly inevitable) irresponsible "Blacks hate gays and are responsible for all their ills" type talk that happens after votes like this. Sylvia has taken on the stupid printed, once again, in Salon Magazine in Carved Up: Black Women and Bodily Integrity. I have committed to reading the Epic of Gilgamesh and it’s all Theriomorph’s fault. Come join the conversation there on building community and effective strategies online and off.

Tuesday, November 18, 2008 by Doc Logan ERSATZ, OHIO: Over a hundred people narrowly escaped with their lives following a tragic explosion at an irony meter factory. “It was horrible.” said plant manager Phil Apocryphal. “Every meter in the place spontaneously blew up. Even the unassembled parts exploded.” Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, but experts suspect the publication of this post by Mark Noonan, on the now ironically named “Blogs for Victory”. Noonan wrote “The people who are so enthused about Obama are starting to disgust me. Never in my life did I ever think I’d see some of my fellow Americans acting so servile to a politician.” Anyone holding a still-intact irony meter is advised to move it away from their homes, in the event Mr. Noonan writes something equally risible.

Monday, November 17, 2008 by Melonhead99 I think all us here where disapointed to see Obama elected the new US Overlord, we were hoping Canada would invade and liberate the US, but never happened sadlt :( Anyway, so news, news, news, well Somalia back in the news, more piracy, thank god for the recent joint US/Ethiopian invasion of Somalia and the African Union Peace Keepers now there, really improved that country, turned it from a country of opressive Islamic rule, into a country where pirates can go about thier daily buisness in peace and security, thank god for western values that support the small buisnessman from government interferance. What else? Oh yeah, Obama picked his secret service code name I see, ‘Renegade’ yes, highly suitable for the leader of one of the two old established big political parties in America, real rebel Obama is. Erm, I’m a celebrity.....Get me outta here! is back on British TV, 10 4th rate celebs living in the jungle and humiliating themselves for the our entertainment. Ok thats not of much interest to you lot? Though on saying that, none of this blog seems of much interest to many :) What else? Oh yeah, Nanette’s return is news, yep, back from her campaigning for McCain and Palin. That’s about it.

Saturday, November 15, 2008 Cool Tool Of The Day - Worldmapper by Nanette I’ve not been online again long enough to get rid of the "everything is strange and new… but still the same" feeling, but I have been doing some wandering around the tubes and have come across a few things to share. Like.... Via CNN -
Very interesting, very detailed and something one could spend some time on, investigating areas of interest and how they relate to the rest of the world. This and the other 365 maps can be found at Worldmapper.
I’ll have more later, when I can, as well as thoughts on the election and some of the aftermath.

There are toys all over the floor, cartoons on the TeeVee, the 1 year old is tired but won’t take his nap, the 4 year old is hooting loudly (singing, he says), whining about orange juice and burying his little brother under empty boxes, the 85 year old is clean and dressed now and sitting on the couch reading the morning paper, the 15 year old (cat) has stopped yowling and is sleeping somewhere, having failed to convince me that I’ve been starving her for days even though she just ate, lunch needs making and breakfast needs cleaning up, the floor needs to be mopped, laundry will have to wait, the 31 year old is at work, hating it but thankful that she has a job, the 50 year old is also thankful the 30 year old has a job… but can’t wait til she also has a babysitter. Grandmas need care too.
I’m not all that interested in politics now that the election is over - the endless speculation over possible appointees and such is just mind-numbing - but, still…
A new book, The Atlas of the Real World, has redrawn the map giving vivid new insights and bringing economic, social and environmental data to life.
