Saturday, October 25, 2008 by Doc Logan Some history… In 1989, a loathsome piece of filth named Charles Stuart murdered his pregnant wife, and shot himself in an attempt to fake a robbery, as cover for the cold blooded killing. Stuart identified the killer as a black man. The Boston police began aggressively questioning everyone who fit the maddeningly vague description, inflaming racial tensions in a city not noted for its kind treatment of its black citizens. Eventually, a man named William Bennett (not the Reagan administration secretary of education, gambling enthusiast, and proponent of the theory that genocide of black people would reduce crime) was arrested. Stuart’s brother Matthew eventually identified Charles Stuart as the killer, and Stuart polluted the Mystic River by hurling himself off the Tobin Bridge. In 1995, Susan Smith told police that “a black man” had carjacked her, abducting her children, who were later found in the car, which Smith had rolled into John D. Long Lake, drowning them. Smith had begun an affair with a man who apparently didn’t want a woman who came with a family. This week, a College Republican and McCain campaign worker named Ashley Todd spun a tale about driving halfway across Pittsburgh to avoid ATM fees, and being mugged by… Try not to be surprised… A black man. A black man who was so outraged by her McCain bumpersticker that he carved a “B” into her cheek with a knife, after taking her money. Todd put a picture on the web of her face, eye blackened, a “B” on her right cheek. Except… The black eye looked nothing like a recently blackened eye would. A fresh black eye is swollen, red, and the white of the eye will be red as well. Furthermore, the “B” was a rather shallow scratch, looking nothing like a knife wound. Furthermore, the “B” was backwards. As if it had been made while looking in a mirror. The Pittsburgh police were suspicious from the start, as were most other observers. Arguably, only the most gullible and credulous were taken in. You no doubt know how this story ends. Todd recanted after the police administered a polygraph, and has been arrested for the hoax. Another creep trying to blame a mythical black man? Yes. But there’s more. Much worse than Todd’s fabulism was the McCain campaign’s frantic attempts to publicize this hoax, stressing the race baiting elements of Todd’s lie. John McCain will not be remembered as the war hero his campaign would like you to believe him to be. He will instead be remembered as a man who tried to inspire the worst instincts of the electorate to eke out a victory. His shame is so much greater than Todd’s, and will be remembered far longer. Even the Fox News web site declared “If the incident turns out to be a hoax, Senator McCain’s quest for the presidency is over, forever linked to race-baiting.” Enjoy your reputation, “Maverick”. |
