As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a believer in any supernatural force. It’s my opinion that viewing the universe as indifferent to our wishes, our hopes, or our very existence is the most logical standpoint.
However, I do see that faith has some benefits. It gives believers a sense that justice will be given, if not in this world, in another. It offers the hope that you’ll be reunited with loved ones long passed.
And it allows you to believe that your prayers will be heard, with the hope that they’ll be answered. Right now millions are praying for the citizens of the Gulf Coast, particularly the people of Louisiana, hit by a violent and unfeeling disturbance of weather given the name Katrina just over three years ago.
In the aftermath of Katrina we discovered the shocking incompetence and stunning cruelty of the right wing (anyone else remember Jonah Goldberg advisng the citizens of New Orleans to “grow gills”?). I would like to see the hurricane fizzle out before hitting land. I would like to see Katrina erased from history, and the horrible loss of life reversed. But I live in the harsh, comfortless environment of the real world.
Sometimes I envy those with the comfort of faith.
About the song: “The Comfort of Faith” is from Banderas’ 1991 album “Ripe”. I have no idea what became of them, and they didn’t leave a very deep footprint in the sands of pop music history. Oh, but this song was gorgeous.
I’ve often thought myself, that I wish I believed in a god, if nothing else I could blame him for my shitty life.
