Seeking light in a murky world

Taken Too Soon

Stanley Kubrick once observed that the truly horrifying fact about the universe is not that it is malevolent, but that it is indifferent. The callous indifference of the universe was displayed by three recent deaths.

Bernie Mac first came to my attention as a standup comedian, but he also was a fine comedic actor as well (There’s a scene in “Bad Santa” where Mac did little aside form eating an orange, but for some reason I cannot possibly explain, it makes me laugh every time). Bernie Mac passed away at the age of 50, far too soon. Thanks for the laughter.

Isaac Hayes was a music industry legend. Beginning his career behind the scenes as a songwriter for the Stax label, Hayes became one of the most daring and influential recording artists of the 1970s. Hayes also was a very accomplished actor, best known for his role as the voice of Chef on “South Park”. Hayes left “South Park” on unfriendly terms, but we shouldn’t hate him, we should hate the fruity little club that scrambled his brains.

Every Thursday, I looked forward to reading TBogg, as it meant another installment of Thursday Basset Blogging. TBogg would share pictures and stories of his basset hounds, Fenway, the newest addition, Beckham, the adorable troublemaker, and Satchmo, the eldest and best behaved. I always enjoyed the pictures of Satchmo, who just seemed like a sweet, gentle soul.

Satchmo is gone now, and while he may not have had the influence and reknown of Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, my heart grew a little heavier upon learning of his passing.

Remember the indifference of the universe, and counter it by letting the people (and pets) you love know that you love them.
